Nigerian music in 2017 reached unprecedented heights. The likes of Davido and Wizkid were at the forefront of this drive. But other musicians released songs that are quite romantic in nature. Classified as ‘love’ songs, these tracks stood out from the thousands released in 2017.
1. Only You - Ric Hassani
In one of the songs off his impressive debut album The African Gentleman, Ric Hassani assures his lover that she is the only one he wants in this song.
2. Your Smile -Tjan
Tjan is carving a niche for himself in the music industry with the release of sweet love songs. On Your Smile, he sings about you guessed right, a woman whose smile brightens up his day.
3. Wonderland - Efe Oraka
Efe was becoming the ‘girl who sang covers’ but with the release of her debut single Wonderland, Efe has melted hearts all over the country. Watch out for her.
4. Ponmile - Reminisce
Rapper Reminisce shocked many with the release of Ponmile. Apart from the fact that he was singing, the theme of the song was different from what many know him for. Using Lota Chukwu and Odunlade Adekola as a couple at odds with each other in the video was another plus.
5. Kwasia - Nonso Amadi ft. Eugy
Nonso Amadi has really graduated from a Soundcloud artist to a full blown RnB star. Kwasia ft. Eugy just confirms that we may have a new Banky W on our hands.
6. Heaven (Susu's song) - Banky W
Call 2017 Banky W’s year and you won't be wrong. This was the year chairman of the Nigerian bachelors got married to the love of his life actress Adesua Etomi. Their marriage broke the internet and to show how much he adored her, Banky dedicated this song to the new Mrs Wellington.
7. Smile For Me - Simi
Another musician who had an amazing 2017, Simi showed Nigerians that she has arrived with the release of her self-titled debut album. Smile For Me is her telling her lover to always make her happy.
8. Romeo & Juliet - Johnny Drille
Johnny Drille signing to Mavin Records just confirmed the fact that he was about to become a national star in future. Coming off the back of the equally amazing Wait For Me, Romeo & Juliet sees him promise his lover that only death will do them apart.
9. Jowo - Aramide
A musician that many still underrate, Aramide on Jowo proves that she can hold her own with the very best in the Nigerian music industry. Her singing about how her lover makes her feel is very pleasing on the ears.
10. Get It Now - Tiwa Savage
All Over and Ma Lo may have been the songs that brought Tiwa Savage all the buzz in 2017, but Get It Now off her EP Sugarcane was equally a beautiful song. If you also thought the title was ‘say it’ like us, you are not alone.
