- Nigerians can be very patriotic to a fault and when a foreigner tries to steal from us, expect a swift reaction
- This is exactly what happened when news broke that one American musician ‘stole’ a song from Phyno
- But the said musician did not steal from the King of the East. Read the full story below
Nigerian indigenous rapper Phyno is currently trending on social media because two popular American artistes Pia Mia and Jeremih have been accused of stealing one of his songs.
This sounds weird right? But when you listen to the song titled I’m a fan, you’ll understand why Nigerians have gone up in arms (on social media).
Listen to both songs below:
But did Pia Mia and Jeremih really steal a song from Phyno? The simplest answer to this question is no. here’s what really happened.
Phyno who had been harboring a desire to go 'international' reached out to producer Remo who produced Pia Mia’s version of the song. After Remo sent the song to Phyno, who planned to include it in his second album (The Playmaker), circumstances changed and Phyno and Remo could not come to an understanding about the song.
But Phyno really liked the vibes of the track so he took the song to another producer named Benjamz who re-recorded it with Mr Eazi and Decarlo. This was the version that eventually made it into the Playmaker album.
When Pia Mia reached out to Remo, he simply gave her the original version of the song and she and Jeremih recorded it.
So Pia did not steal Phyno’s songs instead she recorded a duplicate.
This kind of issue happens regularly in the Nigerian music industry and the only reason why many do not hear about it is because the musicians involved do not bring it to public knowledge.
