Samsung has launched an app called Marshmallow. But mind you, the app has nothing to do with the Android OS of the same name. It is a parental control app.
However, Samsung Marshmallow is also not a regular parental control app. What's different here is that children get to set their own smartphone usage time. In addition, the app rewards kids certain points for their good online behaviour. They can also lose points in case they engage in bad behaviour.
After gaining few points, children can ask their parents for a gift card to use in the gift shops.
Both parents and children can check daily and weekly reports for more detailed usage information.
In addition, parents can choose the apps (that are already installed on the device) they don't want their children to use. They can also set bedtime for kids. It is worth noting that children can use only up to eight apps in the Marshmallow mode.
As expected, the app is compatible with select Samsung smartphones only. The list includes Galaxy S8, S8+, S7, S7+, S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, S5, Note5, Note4, A5, A7, A8, A9, J3, J5, and the Galaxy J7.
The Samsung Marshmallow app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store. It runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop and later OS versions. It would require permission to access the handset's storage, phone/call and Contacts.
Samsung last week launched a new app -- In-Traffic Reply. As the name suggests, Samsung's In-Traffic Reply app allows drivers to easily reply to texts without taking their eyes off the road.
The app can send automated responses to incoming calls and messages on behalf of the driver. It activates automatically when it detects that the user is driving/riding a vehicle. This is done using the smartphone's GPS sensor.
This is not the first time that Samsung has focused on delivering a smartphone app that prevents drivers from getting distracted. Few months back, the South Korean tech giant introduced 'S-Bike' mode in its Galaxy J-series smartphones.
