Responding to allegations that President Muhammadu Buhari was ill, the Office of the Presidency announced on Thursday that there is “no need for apprehension” over the state of the president's health.
Presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu stated this in a press release distributed to news media on Thursday. He said that Mr. Buhari’s absence from the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting on Wednesday, April 26, prompted certain news media to speculate that the president had fallen ill.
Mr. Shehu explained that Mr. Buhari’s doctors advised him to “take things slowly” since returning from his medical vacation in London.
“Full recovery is sometimes a slow process, requiring periods of rest and relaxation, as the Minister for Information, Lai Mohammed, intimated in his press briefing after the FEC meeting on Wednesday,” Mr. Shehu said.
The president’s publicist assured Nigerians that Mr. Buhari remains commander-in-chief of Nigeria, saying that he receives daily briefings from Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and his staff.
Mr. Shehu added that while Mr. Buhari spends a majority of his time in his private residence, his home has a fully equipped office, allowing him to continue to carry out his presidential duties.
