Abdulmumin Jibrin storms High Court with 30 lawyers to challenge his suspension

Following his suspension by the Nigeria House of Representatives in September 2016, Abdulmumin Jibrin stormed the Federal High Court Abuja on Friday, April 28, to challenged the suspension.

Jibrin, who was the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Appropriation was suspended 7 months ago after accusing the House of representatives leader, Yakubu Dogara, and others of Budget padding.

Abdulmumin Jibrin was in court with about 30 lawyers including his lead counsel, Femi Falana.

Jibrin showed up in court in the company of his constituents and about thirty lawyers including his lead counsel, Femi Falana (SAN).

Justice Tsoho, after hearing arguments for and against an application filed by two members of the House, Nicholas Ossai, and Oker Jev, fixed May 10th as the day to determine whether or not to put on hold, proceedings in the suit instituted by Jibrin challenging the legality of his suspension.

Jibrin was suspended for 180 legislative days in September 2016.

Counsel to the lawmakers, Akeem Kareem, told the court that they had already filed a notice of appeal against the ruling of the court delivered on April 13, which prevented them from joining the suit as interested parties.

The lawmakers’ counsel said that they were dissatisfied with the ruling of the court.The position of the two lawmakers in seeking the stay of proceedings was supported by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, and the House of Representatives.

The presiding judge adjourned the case to May 10th.

Jibrin’s counsel, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), asked the court to discountenance the motion for stay of proceedings.He said this was on the grounds that those seeking to stop the substantive matter had no “locus standi” (business) to do so.

360Basic recalled that Jibrin was suspended for 180 legislative days on 27 September 2017, by the by the Federal House of Representatives.

Jibrin suspension came after he sparked a major parliamentary scandals over budget padding.

He was barred from the premises of the National Assembly in the course of the disciplinary action and has not received any salary or allowance since then.
